Toto engineers set for 2025 tour season with DiGiCo

When it was suggested to Toto FOH Ken Freeman he swap his desk for a DiGiCo he agreed. Starting with an SD 10, then a Quantum 338, he recently upgraded to a Quantum 852 for the Dogz of Oz tour and hasn’t looked back. Monitor engineer Steve Kallos could not have imagined swapping from his SD10, but when it was unavailable, the Quantum 338 was ‘thrust upon’ him – he’s pleased that it was.

‘With my previous console, I always had to run a Waves server for EQ and compression, but when I switched to DiGiCo, I found it was such an open, beautiful sounding desk, I was able to lose the server,’ he says.

Clouseau strike again

Marking their 40th anniversary, legendary Belgian band Clouseau embarked on a year-long tour across the Benelux region, including a 14-show run at the Sportpaleis, the largest indoor venue in the country. For these high-profile shows, the band relied DiGiCo Quantum 338 and Quantum 7 digital mixing consoles alongside Klang immersive monitoring.

The primary A/V supplier for the Clouseau tour, Ampli provided an extensive complement of equipment, including the mixing consoles, amplification, transmitters, intercoms and cabling, with Clouseau’s long-time sound engineers, Marcel Cortleven at FOH on a Quantum 338 and Marc Luyckx on a Quantum 7 for monitors. The choice of the consoles marked a significant step up for the band.

Segerstrom Hall upgrade

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California, has completed an upgrade of Segerstrom Hall, a 2,994-seat opera house-style theatre and the largest at the venue, as a venue for Broadway musicals, ballet and other large-scale productions.

The 14-acre campus complex also boasts the 1,704-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and the 375-seat Samueli Theater – a multi-purpose facility, for jazz, cabaret, theatre and special events – as well as the 53,000sq-ft Orange County Museum of Art. Among the many organisations call Segerstrom ‘home,’ include the South Coast Repertory and three resident performance companies – the Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, and the Pacific Chorale.

La Cartonneriev completes sound upgrade

A cornerstone of Reims’ contemporary music scene since its opening in 2005, La Cartonneriev hosts up to 120 concerts annually. The venue houses three performance spaces. The expansive 1,200-capacity Great Hall is accompanied by an intimate 350-seat Club and the versatile Floor – a warm-up area that doubles as a bar and restaurant. Beyond concerts, it supports musicians through residency programmes and drives cultural initiatives like the La Magnifique Society Festival.

The venue recently completed an upgrade to an L-Acoustics eco-friendly L Series system in the Great Hall.

Linkin Park Live Return

Linkin Park are back on the road for 50-plus shows on their From Zero World Tour, which takes the band through stadia and arenas from Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros to Porto Alegre, Brazil, and pretty much everywhere in between. ‘Getting back out on the road has been incredible,’ band co-founder Mike Shinoda said in a statement about the trek promoting the group’s new set. ‘We’re ready to take this energy even further around the world.’

Breaking a seven-year hiatus, the band gave a taste of what’s to come on a whirlwind mini tour of key regions where they would subsequently perform multiple shows in, including Europe and Asia, which also served to introduce new band members co-vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain.

Outline has made five additions to the subwoofers available across its loudspeaker ranges. These include the GTO-Sub, MiniCompass, DBS and Eidos lines.

GTO-Sub

GTO-SubThe GTO-Sub is a passive subwoofer equipped with two long-stroke 18-inch drivers to accompany the GTO (Grand Touring Outline) series.

Like the other elements in this series, the GTO-Sub features innovative rigging hardware manufactured in aerospace alloy – as strong as steel but weighing 66 per cent less. Sixteen modules can be flown in a vertical array (12 in the case of particularly inclined arrays). The design of the cabinet and the flying hardware are also suitable for cardioid arrays in both flown and stacked set-ups.

The GTO-Sub’s frequency response is 28Hz to 160Hz (-10dB) and the SPL of each single element is 145dB (peak value in half-space conditions), with extremely low distortion levels. The loudspeakers’ peak power handling capacity is 9.6kW AES. More information and photos are available on the data sheet.

DBS 18-2

DBS 18-2Building on the performance of Outline’s Subtech 218, the new DBS 18-2 is a passive subwoofer with two 18-inch long-stroke loudspeakers giving a

28Hz to 160Hz (-10dB) frequency response and 143dB SPL for each element (peak value in half-space conditions). The loudspeakers’ peak power handling capacity is 9.6kW AES. More information is available on the data sheet.

A powered version of the DBS 18-2, the DBS 18-2 iMode has the same dimensions and mechanical and electro-acoustic specifications, but features Outline’s proprietary iMode technology and a class-D amplifier (3kW EIAJ on 8Ω). More information is available on the data sheet.

FlySub

Designed for the reinforcement of the low frequencies of the Mini-Compass vertical line array, the FlySub 15 iMode uses a long-stroke 15-inch driver and is equipped with Outline’s proprietary iMode technology and an extremely efficient class-D amplifier (1kW EIAJ on 8Ω).

The acoustic loading is calculated to take on the upper bass frequencies from the Mini-Compass, which is relieved of reproducing its lowest frequencies. This results in greater dynamics and distortion is reduced to a minimum. To achieve these results, the 15-inch loudspeaker (manufactured to Outline specifications) is fitted with a dual spider to enable the system to stand up to hard use and ensure long-term performance. The FlySub’s frequency response covers 35Hz to 550Hz (-10dB) and its peak SPL is 136.5dB.

The cabinet’s shape allows a wide range of geometric configurations in a VLA context, taking into consideration the mechanical stress for which the materials ensuring the necessary safety margins were carefully selected. More information is available on the data sheet.

Passive FlySub 15 is designed for use with the passive Eidos 265 LA vertical line array. The design features the same dimensions and mechanical and electro-acoustic specifications as the FlySub 15 iMode, but requires an external amplifier and DSP when used. More information is available on the data sheet.

Eidos

Eidos 108 SA passive subwoofer for the Eidos series, the Eidos 108 S uses an 8-inch long-stroke loudspeaker fitted with a dual magnet: a transducer able to handle 1kW AES (peak). The dynamics and precision of the low-frequency range of the Eidos 108 S ensure a ‘bigger’ performance than the dimensions of the cabinet suggest [25cm (9.84’’) x 55cm (21.65’’) x 50cm (19.69’’)].

Depth, precision and fast transient response are the key characteristics of this system, which, in spite of its dimensions, is able to confidently operate from the bottom end of the frequency range (38Hz) and can be easily positioned. More information is available on the data sheet.
