Dead & Company
Fifty years on from San Francisco’s fabled Summer of Love, Dead & Company are filling large outdoor venues with throngs of the enduring Deadhead faithful.
With the Grateful Dead name retired after the Fare Thee Well concerts of 2015, three founding band members have been joined three new recruits as Dead & Company, and are performing live again. A recent show at California’s Mountain View amphitheatre attracted 20,000 fans, who were served by a Meyer Sound Leo Family large-scale linear reinforcement system.
Music Inside: festival power
The Music Inside Festival in Rimini this year saw Powersoft X series premium amplifiers serving both PA and monitoring on all three stages at the Rimini Fiera for performances from The Martinez Brothers, Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Vath, Chris Liebing, Loco Dice, Len Faki, Ilario Alicante and Sam Paganini. The two-day event also saw the new Loud Professional Formula F221 subwoofer used for the first time.
The combination of the two Italian manufacturers was selected by Amandla Productions, who had taken over the Festival’s technical production and needed expertise in large-scale festival sound reinforcement.
Indian Wells Tennis refurb
Set in California’s Coachella Valley, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden boasts 29 regulation tennis courts alongside the16,100-seat Stadium 1 – the second-largest tennis-dedicated stadium in the world. Constantly developing under the ownership of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, the facility recently rebuilt and refurbished Stadium 1, including an audio makeover.
The new systems include equipment RTS and Electro-Voice, with Technicomm Industries handling the work. ‘They decided to totally refurbish the main stadium last year,’ says Technicomm Project Manager, Steve Burgess. ‘One goal was to modernise the intercom system to become part of our site-wide Dante audio network, and RTS was one of the few brands with that capability.’
ANU School of Music
The Australian National University (ANU) School of Music has opened a recording studio as the cornerstone of its ambition to become ‘the world’s leading 21st century music school’. Its recording facilities are based around a 48-channel Neve Genesys G96 mixing console – the largest of its kind in Australia.
The Canberra facility offers flexible analogue, digital and hybrid recordings using Pro Tools HDX DAWs, Ampex and MCI analogue tape recorders, a Dynaudio surround-sound monitoring system and an extensive collection of outboard centred on the Genesys.

In addition to a 350-capacity main theatre, the building features a large studio theatre, two TV acting studios, 36 dedicated rehearsal rooms, six recording studios, 12 music ensemble rooms, two dance studios, three floors of dedicated wood, metal, textiles, print and plastics workshops, seven photographic studios, 14 instrumental tuition rooms, a double height 100-sq-m band/live room and a suite of flexible performance and studio spaces.
