A new bar/restaurant in Auckland’s a recently redeveloped Wynyard Quarter, Urban Turban uses Indian styling and high-quality sound system to make the best of its people-watching spot on the waterfront. ‘The audio system is an important part of the ambience in a busy waterfront venue like this, it can’t afford to fail,’ says Halogen Audio’s Rick Senekal.

Urban TurbanLocal A/V contractor Halogen Audio was asked to install loudspeakers for the restaurant’s external pavement areas. As a long-standing user of QSC products, and mindful of the restaurant’s north-facing waterfront location, Senekal chose models from the QSC AcousticDesign series for their durable construction and ability to endure constant exposure to the wind, sun, salt air and water. After a short while, the venue’s management was so impressed with the sound outside the restaurant that they asked Senekal to replace the loudspeakers inside with QSC ADs too.

The completed system comprises seven AD-S52 5-inch and two AD-S82 8-inch two-way loudspeakers, finished in black to match Urban Turban’s décor, and driven by QSC RMX850 and GX3 amplifiers respectively. The loudspeakers and amplifiers, along with a new Shure wireless microphone system, were supplied by Auckland-based Now Sound, exclusive NZ distributor for QSC products.

‘From long experience of QSC amps and speakers, I know the system at Urban Turban won’t fail, even with all that the Auckland weather can throw at the place,’ Senekal says. ‘And I know my friends at the restaurant are happy with the system, because they keep on inviting me back for beers on the house. That’s what I call a successful install.’
