While millions of tourists visit the island of Manhattan each year, the best views of New Yorks’s famed skyline are to be had from across the East River in Brooklyn. Here, the Dumbo neighbourhood offers a trendy enclave with hip nightlife, high-end eateries, and hotels.
Nestled on Brooklyn’s scenic waterfront, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is the newest jewel in the crown of sustainable luxury hotel chain SH Hotels. The hotel’s design is inspired by the neighbourhood history, integrating reclaimed materials from the building’s past with exquisite new décor. Along with its superb dining, sound is provided by DAS Audio loudspeaker systems.
SH Hotels’ Entertainment Director Alex Butler designs the sound and lighting systems for the company’s hotels worldwide. As he explains, high-quality sound is a non-negotiable consideration. ‘In a city like New York, where there’s so much entertainment happening everywhere, it’s imperative to have quality sound. We have DJs three-to-four nights a week, live music two nights a week, and during the summer in particular this place is slammed five-to-six days every week.’
The hotel’s marquis venue is Harriet’s Rooftop Restaurant & Bar, offering sweeping views of the river, skyline and bridge. Harriet’s is used 24 Artec-308 two-way 8-inch full-range systems supported by six Action-S18 subwoofers, delivering even coverage across the entire venue without overpowering the ambience.
‘Guests want to have good music, amazing cocktails, and great quality sound,’ Butler says. ‘The goal is to have people be engulfed by the sound, but not overpowered by it.’ The DJ booth is beefed up with a pair of Action-508A active bi-amped two-way cabinets.
Upstairs from Harriet’s, the rooftop pool and wrap-around patio is where the party is on warmer nights. The area is covered by 46 Factor-8-IP54 two-way vented 8-inch systems, with more than enough bottom served up by 24 Q-10 Passive subs, each equipped with a kit accessory from DAS Audio that converts them to a weatherized solution. All systems are powered by E11Even Sound by DAS Audio EP Series amplification, with design by DAS Audio Hospitality and Nightclub National Sales Manager John Fiorito, equipment provided by Randy White of Washington Music Center, and installed by Guillermo ‘Willy’ Rodriguez of Willy-Tech Services.
Butler discovered DAS Audio during a sound system renovation at 1 Hotel South Beach in Miami. ‘I was really blown away by the quality of the product and by the price point,’ he says. ‘And from that initial project in South Beach we’ve developed an amazing relationship. We’ve been so happy with the quality of their products and their support, and guests have had nothing but good things to say.
