Sterling Audio has released the MX Black Series active studio monitors – bi-amplified speakers built for optimal frequency dispersion and articulate sound within a wide sweet spot.
The series includes three models: the MX8 Black, which features an 8-inch low-frequency driver and 1-inch tweeter; the MX5 Black, with a 5-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter; and the MX3 Black (sold in pairs), with 3-inch woofers and 0.75-inch tweeters.
MX Black Series monitors feature acoustically engineered, multi-fibre, low-frequency cone drivers for damping to minimise sonic artefacts and unnatural resonance, with silk-dome tweeters using neodymium magnets. A rear-panel acoustic port reduces low-frequency turbulence and distortion.
All MX Black Series models feature variable high-pass (+2dB, 0dB or -2dB) and low-pass (-3dB, 0dB or +3dB) filters that enable custom tuning of monitors to suit listening preferences and recording environment. The MX8 and MX5 sport balanced XLR, balanced quarter-inch TRS, and unbalanced RCA inputs; the MX3 offers unbalanced RCA inputs. All models employ studio-grade internal components and protective circuitry.
MX Black Series monitors are powered by high-efficiency, low-distortion, class-A/B power amplifiers. The top-of-the-line MX8’s 125W power amplifier and 8-inch woofer enable it to deliver a frequency response from 37Hz to 22kHz. The compact MX 5 is driven by 70W of class-A/B power and covers 42Hz to 22kHz. The portable MX3 delivers a frequency response of 55Hz to 22kHz and features a 40W power amplifier.
The Sterling MX Black Series monitors are priced at US$99.99 a pair for the MX3, US$119.99 each for the MX5, and US$179.99 each for the MX8.
