GZBN Broadcast CentreGuangzhou Broadcasting Network (GZBN) has equipped its new Broadcast Centre with a range of TSL audio monitoring systems. Serving multiple functions, these accelerate the broadcaster’s workflow and consolidate operators’ tasks, as well as supporting HD/SD/Stereo/Dolby 5.1 capabilities.

As the commercial television network serving China’s Guangdong province, GZBN operates a public channel and six cable channels, broadcasting news, sports, drama, shopping channels, children’s entertainment and English language programmes to more than 70 million local viewers and across the whole of China via satellite.

The TSL equipment, which will be installed by Suntec Broadcast Technology and systems integrator Century Sage System Ltd, includes 23 PAM2-MK2 multichannel audio monitors, 28 SAM1-3GM studio audio monitoring units and 23 MPA1-3G MP series audio monitoring units.

‘We had used TSL Products equipment in our previous building, and it was the clear choice again for our new Broadcast Centre,’ says GZBN Senior Engineer, and VP of Play Out Centre, Guangping He. ‘TSL provides multi-functional solutions, which are essential in a complex environment - for instance the SAM1 can monitor and mix SDI audio, analogue and AES audio at same time. This mixing and routing capability means we do not need a separate router and panel to manage the different sources; the operator can easily monitor different sources using the solo mode in the SAM1. In addition the PAM2-MK2 can monitor level meters and loudness and video on LCD screens, while also controlling 5.1 surround. This flexibility in such high-quality systems is perfect for our requirements.’

The PAM2-MK2 is designed for complex broadcast audio workflows. Key features include extended Loudness capabilities to ensure broadcasters comply with standards, and an external SDI monitor output that exports displays to an external monitor (such as a multiviewer or video display) for ‘at a glance’ review of mission critical audio information. The SAM1-3GM studio audio monitoring unit is for use in television production, providing visual feedback from 16 channels of embedded SDI with two auxiliary analogue or AES input channels, which can be mixed into the monitoring chain. The recently launched Madi version allows Madi signals can be monitored and mixed with any of the analogue and digital channels. The MPA1-3G accepts any SD- or HD-SDI signal up to and including 3G, and features a power amplifier and speaker system for critical listening. It is lightweight and compact, making it particularly suitable for OBs or where space is limited.

The PAM2-MK2 units are already installed in the Master Control Room and Playout Centre, while the SAM1-3GM and MPA1-3G units are planned for installation in the Studio, Edit Suite and Voice-Over room in November 2014. The facility is scheduled to go live at the end of 2014.
