United RecordingFormerly known as Ocean Way Recording and owned by Allen Sides, the famed recording studio located at 6050 Sunset Blvd has reopened under its original name of United Recording.

Acquired by Hudson Pacific Properties – the holding company that owns the Sunset Gower and Sunset Bronson Studios film studios located next door – the studio was opened by audio pioneer Bill Putnam in 1957 with the backing of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, and was one of the first independent recording studios. It is reckoned be behind the sales of more than a billion records.

‘United Recording is a legendary studio in the heart of Hollywood,’ says Bill Humphrey, General Manager of Sunset Gower/Sunset Bronson Studios. ‘It is not only a piece of entertainment industry history but remains a highly sought-after production space for top artists.’

The original control rooms and recording spaces remain virtually untouched with the original equipment still in place and the acoustic design favoured by artists ranging from Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ray Charles to modern hit makers, such as Radiohead, Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The lounges and common spaces, meanwhile, have undergone significant upgrades. Hudson Pacific Properties acquired the studio in 2013 and is striving to continue the legacy of this historic recording studio.

‘The studio’s rebranding back to the original name, United Recording, is one component of a continued investment in strategic media and entertainment properties and reinforces our goal of providing exceptional multimedia production facilities and services to global media and entertainment clients,’ says Victor Coleman, CEO of Hudson Pacific Properties.

‘This is a pivotal time in the studio’s history,’ adds United Recording Manager, Rob Goodchild. ‘We look to the future while holding ourselves to the standards of our past.’
