Three years on from the announcement of the Si Compact and a year in the making, Soundcraft has taken the wraps off the Si Performer range of live sound mixers.

Unveilled to an invited audience at London’s Soho Theatre last week, the new Performer range was rolled out under the banner ‘It’s all about the performer’. And indeed it was, with live performances demonstrating the ability of the console to handle not only the audio required by the afternoon’s live music, but the lighting too.

The market research behind the Si Compact resulted in a desk that brought a wealth of sought-after features together in a powerful package with an efficient footprint. But, as Soundcraft Product Manager Richard Ayres outlined, the success of the desk’s specification and capability brought it to the attention of potential users that lay outside the original target – and got the Stoundcraft design team thinking. ‘What if we were to…’

‘What if…’ thinking took soundcraft into previously uncharted territory, both in terms of its intended users and applications, and its technology. As a result, the Si Performenr line is the first sound desk to bring DMX lighting control to the engineer. While Soundcraft is clear that it is aimed at single-operator applications, it is inescapable that the Si Perfrmer reverses the trend of sound duties falling into the hands of others – as with single-operator camera crews.

That the launch was light on detail and high in hospitality betrays the confidence that Soundcraft has in its latest initiative. This is one to watch.
