Recalling the grandeur of the British colonial period, the Gaitey Theatre in Himachal Pradesh required a loudspeaker system that would not only meet its sound requirements but also respect this Indian historical landmark.

Gaitey TheatreThe installation followed the building’s recent restoration for use as a drama theatre and auditorium for classical and cultural activities. With 320 seats set over the ground floor and balconies to cover, the design team from audiovisual specialist M/S Godrej turned to Tannoy.

Leading the team, Mr Haider proposed a system based on Tannoy’s QFlex steerable array system, keeping in mind the minimum install and architectural requirements for a 124-year-old Heritage building. Along with its beam steering capabilities, QFlex was chosen for its handling of both voice and music in acoustically challenging spaces. ‘We proposed this solution because we knew the quality of Tannoy loudspeaker and had experience of how effective QFlex can be in terms of intelligibility,’ says Haider. ‘I’m glad to say that the user and performers find it as fantastic system for their performances, as it gives a uniform coverage in the auditorium.’

As well as two QFlex 24s, two VS 18DR subs and two V8 sound reinforcement loudspeakers were installed to provide full-range coverage and fill where required. The installed audio system was completed with the addition of a Biamp Nexia for signal routing and Yamaha mixing consoles. QSC amplifiers powered the Tannoy V8s and VS subs.
