With the aim of establishing ‘a unified European platform to represent wireless microphone users and RF professionals and to safeguard spectrum access for audio Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE)’, the Wireless Microphone Spectrum Alliance (WMSA) Europe will act as a technical and operational voice in Europe to ensure that European spectrum policy is accurately informed and duly accounts for the realities and working practices of professional audio PMSE event planning and production.

WMSA Europe launchesUnder the banner The European Voice of Wireless Microphone & RF Professionals, WMSA Europe addresses a critical reality: wireless audio usage is expanding rapidly while spectrum availability continues to shrink.

‘Increasing regulatory pressure on audio PMSE spectrum, particularly in the UHF range, including the 600MHz band, threatens to exacerbate an already acute imbalance between growing operational demand and regulatory access,’ the body says. ‘Wireless microphones and RF systems are essential to broadcasting, live entertainment, cultural institutions, touring productions, film and television production, houses of worship and major events across Europe.’

As spectrum congestion intensifies, the practical expertise of RF coordinators and wireless audio professionals is becoming ever more important. Testimony from those whose livelihoods rest on managing wireless audio in complex live spectrum environments is vital to ensuring efficient spectrum use, and reliable, interference-free operation. In an industry characterised by a high proportion of self-employed and highly skilled RF professionals, WMSA Europe brings them together to promote technical excellence, unify and amplify their voices and complement other associations with the shared goal of supporting audio PMSE in European spectrum discussions.

WMSA Europe’s stated mission is: to defend and promote access by audio PMSE to critical spectrum resources; bring together and inform RF coordinators, sound engineers and event professionals; promote the next generation of RF specialists; and to build a dynamic and diverse European advocacy and knowledge platform.

Founder members include leading RF professionals from France, Italy, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the UK and Denmark, with expansion underway. The network supports cross-border coordination for touring productions, shared best practices, and consistent professional standards across Europe.

The association brings that deep field expertise and technical evidence into dialogue with European decision-makers to promote efficient spectrum management, best practice coordination techniques, cross-border collaboration, and long-term certainty for audio PMSE users.

WMSA Europe invites RF coordinators, wireless audio professionals, equipment suppliers and live production organisations to join this growing European community and help ensure that real-world operational expertise informs European spectrum policy.

‘Long-term security of spectrum access for audio PMSE is not just a technical necessity,’ the body implores, ‘it is a foundation stone of Europe’s dynamic and irreplaceable cultural and creative ecosystem.’
