The former Ewald colliery in Germany’s Ruhr region has taken on a new span of life as the Moto59 Foodgarage. Where miners once worked underground, the Nord Machine Hall of Shaft 7 combines industrial architecture, detailed interior design, and a professional RCF sound system.

Moto59 FoodgarageLocated in Herten, the Foodgarage is spread over several floors, each with its own character. From the original hoisting machine to restored motorcycles and oil barrels turned into tables, the venue presents a carefully crafted environment that attracts visitors not only for its gastronomy but also for its setting. This diversity of spaces required a sound solution that could adapt to different acoustic needs without interfering with the historic atmosphere.

For the main areas, RCF Compact M 10 loudspeakers provide full-range coverage, supported by S 15 subwoofers for low-frequency extension. Smaller zones are served by Compact M 06, Compact M 08 and Compact M 05 models, ensuring balanced performance where space and discretion are essential. On the rooftop terrace and gallery areas, WMR 50T wall-mounted loudspeakers deliver consistent sound while blending into the architecture.

The system, comprising 62 RCF loudspeakers, was installed by Music & Lights, under the direction of Eero Sossinka, and designed so that each floor can be controlled independently. This allows different scenarios to coexist – for example, relaxed dining with subtle background sound on the ground floor, while a company event or after-work party takes place upstairs.

‘It was clear from the start that we needed maximum flexibility because the hall extends over several floors – without a proper sound system, it simply wouldn’t work,’ explains Moto59 MD, Carsten Kubacki. ‘And it was essential that it didn’t detract from the charm of the old machinery and our elaborate decorations. The RCF loudspeakers fit perfectly into the overall concept. The first DJ sets were a complete success – easy to handle and compelling in terms of sound.’

The Moto59 Foodgarage is a prime example of how historic industrial sites can be repurposed into contemporary use. RCF’s sound solutions demonstrate how a vast product catalogue can deliver audio performance while maintaining a design that coexists with both architectural heritage and modern environments.
