Among the largest multifunction venues in Europe, Budapest’s20,000-capacity MVM Dome is also home to Europe’s largest handball arena and recently hosted the 2022 European Men’s Handball Championships. Designed by Hungarian architect György Skardelli and built by Market PLC, it fell to ZAJ Systemhouse to provide a sound system capable of delivering extremely high intelligibility, 106dB SPL and even coverage throughout the seating and playing field areas.

MVM Dome sets new sound benchmark in BudapestThe facility boasts innovative spaces and versatility in layout arrangement, as well as unique architectural features. It is able to stage large-scale concerts, shows, family entertainment, corporate events and exhibitions. The stadium’s PA rig comprises a 48 Outline Stadia enclosures – 12 100-10 boxes, 26 100-20 boxes and ten 100-30 boxes, These are accompanied by 16 STSub 215 subwoofers and driven by a GTA (Grand Touring Amplifier) powerhouse.

‘We proposed the [Outline] Stadia rig as one of the world’s highest quality sound systems specifically engineered for stadium sound, therefore the most suitable for this project, and the company’s reputation was sufficient to ensure its acceptance without any real competition,’ says ZAJ CEO and founder, Tamás Fazekas.

Two years passed between the first design being drawn and the definitive version, with the client’s requirements evolving and expanding throughout, resulting in one of the Hungary’s most versatile multifunction venues, as well as one of the most modern.

Although each cabinet appears to be a point source at first glance, in fact it is an array combining four of Outline’s road-proven Mantas modules in a single unit, with Outline’s patented DPRWG waveguides. Expectations in terms of system performance were exceeded in spite of the change in the set-up’s format. This was also achieved thanks to Stadia’s very long throw and exceptional directional control.

As on other prestige projects, Outline’s OpenArray 3D software ensured a high-precision preview of the acoustic results that were effectively obtained once the rig was in place. ‘The system was very well-accepted and is working fine,’ Fazekas reports. ‘We are very happy and satisfied with the sound quality and measured parameters which are truly excellent, and this project once again confirmed our belief in the supremacy of Outline audio products. This reference opens the door for such large-scale projects with Outline as the manufacturer and Zaj, as designer and integrator worldwide.’
