A collection of 463 items belonging to Florian Schneider are up for auction – in line with his expressed wish that his instruments continue to be used and not become part of a ‘collection’.
Overseen by California-based Julien’s Auction, the says will be held at the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, at 10am on 19 November. It is described by the auction house as ‘the first auction to feature a comprehensive collection of items from [Schneider]’s personal life and career’.
The collection comprises items that previously owned by Kraftwerk co-founder Florian Schneider, , who died in 2020, including assorted electronic equipment, a number of synthesisers (including an EMS Synthi A, Sennheiser Roland VP-330 Plus Vocoder, VSM-200 Vocoder, Kling Klang Moog Vocoder, Kling Klang ARP 2600 and Yamaha CS30), microphones (Neumann U47, U49 and M49), drum machines (Korg Rhythm 55 and KPR-77, Roland TR-606, Korg PS-3200 among them), clothing (including lederhosen), paintings and a dentist’s chair.
Among the many notable items for sale are Schneider’s 1964 Volkswagen van, the Panasonic bicycle he rode in the 1984 music video for a remix of Tour De France, a copy of the band’s second studio album Kraftwerk 2 signed by Schneider and addressed to his mother, various woodwind and brass instruments, including the 1960s Orsi alto flute that appeared on the back cover of the electronic pioneers’ 1970 eponymous debut album, and his German passport from 1968.
