Amplification

Alcons Audio has released the Director6, its latest high-performance amplified loudspeaker controller, purpose-built to drive Alcons’ pro-ribbon systems in fixed and semi-permanent installations.

Alcons Audio Director6At the heart of the proprietary Director lies a robust eight-channel DSP engine coupled to eight advanced, bridgeable class-D amplifier stages, delivering 6kW in total of audiophile-grade power. Designed with precision and flexibility in mind, the Director provides an 8-input/8-output matrix architecture, accepting both analogue and AES3 digital inputs (up to 192kHz), while all signals are processed at a native 96kHz resolution.

The Director6’s infrastructure allows for different powering configurations, from eight outputs delivering 750W into 4Ω, to four outputs with 1.5kW into 4Ω, or any configuration between.

The Director ensures ultra-low latency and high-resolution processing, even with complex FIR and IIR algorithms. The integrated DSP supports full channel control with eight-band EQ, delay, phase adjustments, and Alcons’ proprietary VHIR phase processing. Factory-loaded system presets and user-definable configurations provide a plug-and-play experience for every Alcons system design.

For user control, the Director features a full on-unit interface with 3.12-inch OLED display, intuitive LED-illuminated rotary encoder, and multi-colour LED feedback per channel. The system’s modular internal design enables field servicing and upgrades, including swappable power/amplifier modules and a dedicated DSP PCB for future-proof performance.

Equipped with four digitally controlled power supplies featuring active Power Factor Correction, the Director guarantees high output efficiency and worldwide voltage compatibility. Integration with Alcons’ ALControl Ethernet-based network system allows centralized control of multiple units, while redundant network ports and expansion options ensure readiness for future audio-over-IP protocols.

‘Ever since our beginning, we embraced the system philosophy with transducers, acoustics, amplification and processing as an integrated eco system,’ says Alcons Audio R&D, Philip de Haan. ‘Main reason was to guarantee a repeatable, consistent and reliable optimal performance; Understanding that our pro-ribbon systems reveal any detail, we always took the ambitious route of a proprietary development, instead of just choosing a rebadged OEM solution. “HiFi at concert sound pressure levels” reaches again new heights with the Director ALC as drive engine for the Alcons pro-ribbon sound systems.’
