Producer and live engineer Ben Capp divides his time between touring and mixing/mastering projects at his home studio in the Hampshire countryside. Recently, he traded in his Audient iD44 for an 24-input/32-output iD48 interface to address his need for a more flexible and uncluttered workspace.
Known for his work with the internationally renowned jazz trio Mammal Hands and a busy recording schedule that includes Around About Dusk and Edward Chilvers, Capp says the iD48 has delivered: ‘It can do everything I throw at it,’ he reports.
The iD48 quickly proved its worth by seamlessly integrating into Capp’s set-up, which balances high-quality tracking at residential facilities like Giant Wafer Studios with mixing and mastering at his home base.
The iD48 significantly increased Capp’s potential input count to 24 channels for mobile recording and mixing, while offering the flexibility of choosing the ADC path for each of the eight available channels. Crucially, it provides the option to insert outboard gear onto every channel – a feature vital for his hybrid workflow.
A major draw was the unit’s physical design. ‘One of the great things about the iD48 is just how neat it is,’ he explains. ‘It sits directly in front of my mixing position anyway, clears my space and is there only when I need it.’
This complements his recent addition of an external nOb Control for precision automation, creating a focused, distraction-free environment.
Despite its professional feature set, the iD48 is straightforward in use: ‘It has the pro functionality without overcomplicating things,’ Capp says. ‘The overall potential of the iD48 means that I’m in no way limited for my needs – tracking with console-grade mic preamps, mixing with outboard and good monitoring and even swapping over to playing a vinyl through it, or just playing some guitar.’
Capp is currently mixing the upcoming debut album for Around About Dusk and the new record for Mammal Hands, both of which are slated for release in early 2026.
