The Marlstone hills of Zuid-Limburg in the Netherlands are home to the Openluchttheater Valkenburg, which ranks among the oldest and most striking open-air theatres in Europe. Designed by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, it now relies on a sound system from dBTechnologies, with a focus on VIO line arrays.

Inaugurated in 1916, the theatre has evolved into a cultural landmark. Each year, it attracts audiences with a programme ranging from classical music and opera to jazz, world music, pop, cabaret and children’s theatre. The theatre’s extraordinary setting – where architecture and nature blend in perfect harmony – creates both moving experiences in the amphitheatre and intimate moments in the grotto theatre.

Openluchttheater ValkenburTo ensure this artistic variety is delivered with the highest acoustic quality, the venue relies on sound system technology from dBTechnologies, with a particular focus on the VIO system.

‘For us, it is vital that the acoustic quality matches the unique atmosphere of our theatre,’ says Dennis Blom, owner of TDS Productions and responsible for the installation at the Openluchttheater Valkenburg. ‘With the VIO system from dBTechnologies, we can reproduce the full breadth of our programme – from delicate, intimate performances to large band productions – with authenticity and power. The technology integrates seamlessly into our historic setting and enhances the special experience we want to offer our audience.’

For current productions, a tailor-made VIO system is in use comprising two hangs of seven VIO L210 line array units placed left and right of the stage as a full-range system, delivering optimal speech intelligibility and musical presence. Two 2 S218 subwoofers in cardioid add bass reproduction with controlled dispersion, while two VIO X206 provide fills to complement the soundfield.

With this set-up, the Openluchttheater Valkenburg guarantees its audiences a homogeneous, powerful and detailed sound experience that underlines the venue’s unique character.
