Fiji will clear the way toward a new spectrum plan when its broadcasters move to new frequencies on 1 July. Industry players are being requested to adjust their equipment to the new frequencies on 30 June.

The new allocations for both radio and television broadcasters are ‘in line with government’s plan to drive innovations in the FM broadcasting and television sectors’. ‘The Government’s reallocation of spectrum under the new plan will ensure this resource is managed and positioned for the benefit of all Fijians and release frequencies that will allow additional TV and radio broadcasting services,’ explains Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The new allocations will also bring Fiji more closely in line with to other state broadcasters, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the BBC.

It will ensure Fiji becomes one of the first Pacific countries with international spectrum planning. In addition, a additional national television programme channel will be commissioned through the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation.
