Hazelrigg Industries has released the 4DI, a 2U-high four-channel, all-tube Direct Injection (DI) box.
The equivalent of four of the company’s VDI tube direct boxes, the 4DI’s input circuitry is based on the same design as DW Fearn’s VT-I/F all-triode, vacuum tube direct box. The 4DI claims a ‘unique harmonic enhancing design that actually enriches the sound of whatever you plug in to it’.
‘Any circuit will saturate once you hit a certain level, and that saturation will generate certain harmonics,’ Doug Fearn explains. ‘I designed the VT-I/F so it would reject third-order and fifth-order harmonics, which introduce harshness and distortion, and reinforce second-order and fourth-order harmonics, which reinforce the fundamentals of the original signal. In short, you get more of the good stuff and less of the bad.’
‘Hazelrigg Industries 4DI has been an inspiring addition to my studio,’ says early user engineer Mark Parfitt (Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, Normani). ‘There’s a noticeably higher level of detail and a much more pleasing sonic footprint. Vintage synths are bigger and beefier, and recorded instruments sound more realistic, making them connect more deeply emotionally. I wish everyone’s recordings sounded this good.’
The 4DI is available exclusively through Sweetwater in the US, with an MSRP of US$3,400.
