The largest loudspeaker the Swiss manufacturer has yet developed, PSI Audio’s new A226-Main is intended primarily for critical listening in mastering studios.
The monitor carries two 10-inch LF drivers, complemented by midrange driver and tweeter, housed in a solid, fully reinforced double MDF enclosure. The four power amplifiers – 500W (2 x 250W), 150W and 65W – cover a frequency range from 20Hz to 23kHz (-6dB) to 112dB (at 1m according to the new AES 75 standard) and up to 126dB peak.
As part of the development cycte, PSI Audio developed an all-new aluminium coil dome tweeter to accurately deliver highs. For the midrange, the company selected the EXD driver from the A25-M monitor, and for the lower frequencies, the A226-Main employs two 10-inch woofers, driven by a single amplifier channel, making the loudspeaker a three-way system. Its double flow guide bass reflex ensures powerful bass without air turbulence or noise.
The two woofers are placed in a symmetrical configuration on either side of the mid-high baffle, which can be rotated as required. This configuration and the waveguides achieve a limitation of vertical dispersion and a wide sweet spot. There is also a stand designed specifically for this monitor to allow optimum orientation at all times.
Compensated Phase Response (CPR) ensures tightly aligned reproduction of the different bands, Adaptive Output Impedance (AOI) monitors driver movement and optimises transients. The class-G/H amplifiers efficiently drive the system with high SPL output and low distortion. The technology is entirely and 100 per cent analogue to guarantee accurate reproduction and avoid latency.
Like all PSI Audio speakers, the A226-Main is developed, built, and calibrated entirely in the company’s Switzerland plant. From the selection of components to the final calibration in am anechoic chamber, the production process claims ‘world-famous Swiss precision’. All A226-Mains come with their own performance graph.
