Radial Engineering Decoder

Radial Engineering has announced the Decoder, a self-contained MS (mid-side) interface.

‘When we started working on the Decoder, we knew full well that a savvy engineer can pull together an MS patch using a traditional console, but we felt that there are a number of users who would prefer to have a simple plug-and-play kit to do the job,’ says Radial Product Specialist, Ryan Juchnowski. ‘Once we got started, we became convinced this would be a treat for those with smaller studios where patching facilities may be limited or for those who plan to Reamp using pre-recorded tracks.’

The Decoder has three XLR inputs, with Input 1 for a centre mic, and Input 2 for a single output fig-8 mic or for those using two cardioid mics. Individual on/off switches and level controls for all three inputs are located on the front panel.

A recessed 48V phantom power switch may be activated to supply DC for condenser microphones. A high-pass filter may also be engaged to eliminate excessive low frequency rumble and improve stereo focus. When using two separate microphones to create a fig-8 pattern, a 180° switch is engaged to reverse the polarity of the Mic 2b input. Top-mounted selector switches enable the Decoder to be used with microphones or line level sources when applying MS imaging to pre-recorded tracks.

The Decoder is made from 14-gauge steel, and its unique book-end design creates a protective zone around the front panel switches and potentiometers keeping them safe from damage. The internal I-beam construction is rigid to assure the sensitive internal PC board will not torque, preventing premature development of cold solder joints.

The Decoder may be rackmounted by using the optional Radial SA rack-mount kit, and is shipping at the MAP of US$349.99.
