The Man with the Golden Mic – or Lee Towers, as the ‘godfather of Dutch popular music’ is otherwise known – took to the stage for a series of concerts at the New Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam. With a full band and orchestra in support, stage monitoring was an important consideration.

Allen & Heath ME-1 personal monitorMonitor engineer Jens Koolwijk managed audio design on the project, and tested several personal monitor systems before requesting 28 Allen & Heath ME-1 personal monitor mixers from Dutch PA company, SoundWorks.

‘The decision was an easy one – ME just works like clockwork,’ he reports. ‘There’s no hassle, it’s easy to set up, and the audio quality is sublime.’

An iLive iDR-16 MixRack was employed as a system management hub for the ME mixers, using the Rack’s Madi interface to connect to the main monitor mixer. Forty channels of Madi fed the iDR-16, giving access to a full-blown iLive DSP system if adjustments were needed to the Madi stream. The iDR-16 was controlled using iLive Editor, leaving the ACE connection free to feed the ME-1 mixers.

‘Feedback from the musicians was very positive,’ van Koolwijk says. ‘The orchestra was very pleased with the natural sound and ease of use, and the drummer was thrilled that he could finally adjust his bass drum and snare separately.’
