Octave at the HK Academy for Performing Arts
Building the reputation of talented sound designer Yuen Cheuk Wa, the recent production of Octave at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts came to an end recently.

Running for 19 performances, the musical – which uses pop music to follow a group of young people attempting to uncover true values in life – starred Hong Kong singers Ivana Wong and Hins Cheung in a 150-minute Cantonese production.

Alongside his experience in sound design, Wa has worked with British artistic director-designer Mark Fisher and Hong Kong pop music composer Joseph Koo Ka-fai. He is also part of Primary Shapes, who performed the astonishing An Eternal Golden Braid at 2010’s HK Arts Festival.

Key to the Ocatve production were the Sennheiser mics used on stage. ‘Previously, I’ve only used the MKE 2 so when I was offered the opportunity to try the MKE 1 for Octave, it was a no-brainer,’ Wa said. ‘Being the smallest lavalier mic in the Sennheiser family, the MKE 1 has surprising audio quality and is by far the most outstanding equipment I’ve come across in terms of picking up sounds that matter. From the wireless transmission to the connectors, to the quality of the microphones and the resistance to perspiration, Sennheiser was a perfect choice for this production.’

Sound Designer Yuen Cheuk Wa The songs were deliverd at a fast tempo and, coupled with the stage moves, the artists were prone to perspiration. ‘At the same time, clarity and a close-field sound ambience were of utmost importance for the audience to follow the plot,’ Wa adds. ‘The interaction and accolades from the audience during each show was the best assurance that we had achieved our objectives.’

Octave Director Alvin Wong also attributed some of the success of the musical to the support of Sennheiser: ‘We were very happy to have Sennheiser as a partner for Octave and, more importantly, impressed with the domain knowledge and depth of understanding of our artistic direction displayed by our counterparts at Sennheiser.

The Sennheiser crew also assisted the production team with the radio frequency management. ‘We certainly look forward to more extensive collaboration in future,’ Wong concludes.
