Sonarworks has announced SoundID Reference for Multichannel, guided software that reckons to minimise human error and deliver consistent and accurate speaker measurements and calibration for audio systems from stereo up to 9.1.6 channels.

Sonarworks SoundID Reference for Multichannel‘Calibration of multichannel set-up is crucial for efficient and accurate monitoring,’ says Sonarworks co-founder and CPO, Martins Popelis. ‘If the frequency response of the speakers in the room is not matched, sound objects change their sound as you pan them across the room. If delays of the channels are not aligned, sound from speakers arrives to your ears at different times inevitably destroying the soundstage. If your multichannel set-up is not calibrated, it’s difficult to produce content that translates well outside your personal room.

‘That’s what drove us to create a product that allows anyone to calibrate multichannel system on their own, thus improving the quality and speed of the creative work, enabling considerably better translation of spatial mixes between studios and to end-user devices.’

With the need for surround audio growing in film, gaming, virtual reality and music, more engineers are upgrading stereo set-ups to multichannel, and are building new multichannel studios. SoundID Reference for Multichannel is designed to make it easier for those mixing at home and in professional settings to achieve accurate, and reliable sound. Creators are now able to measure and calibrate a multichannel set-up in less than an hour.

The software simplifies speaker measurement; the microphone location technology and streamlined process offer versatile application via plug-in and exporting of a calibration profile to the most popular multichannel hardware, including Avid MTRX with SPQ DSP, Avid MTRX Studio, DAD AX32 with SPQ DSP, and Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite. Further hardware support is expected later in 2022.
