German hardware manufacturer Ferrofish has launched the Pulse 16 AE, the next iteration of its line of AD/DA converters.
The new AE edition replaces the silver-fronted Pulse 16, delivering cutting-edge converter technology, expanded functionality and an all-black finish, bringing it in line with the 8-channel Pulse 8 AE and 32-channel A32pro Series. With upgraded ESS converters, single-channel routing and expanded remote-control options, the Pulse 16 AE sets a new benchmark for affordable professional-grade conversion for both studio and live environments.
At the heart of the Pulse 16 AE is a new ESS-based converter design, featuring the ESS ES9017 DAC and ESS ES9840Q ADC. This new architecture delivers a higher dynamic range and significantly lower THD+N than its predecessor, ensuring clarity and accuracy from input to output.
Beyond the group-based routing of its predecessor, the Pulse 16 AE introduces single-channel routing. Every individual channel can now be freely assigned via a flexible matrix, giving engineers complete control over signal flow and opening up new creative possibilities for custom set-ups in both studio and live sound workflows.
The Pulse 16 AE also offers USB-C connectivity for Ferrofish’s RemoteFish software, making configuration and management easier than ever on both Mac and PC, alongside a set of Midi I/O, which also now responds to Midi controller messages.
A redesigned modern user interface found on the front panel – which includes level metering for all 16 input and 16 output channels – makes navigation clearer, faster and more intuitive than before.
The Pulse 16 AE also features an optional DSP stick upgrade, designed to add further onboard audio processing features to further extend the device’s capabilities. It also drops the optional Madi upgrade path of the original Pulse 16, instead focusing on delivering the very latest in conversion, routing and control technology. The Pulse 16 MX and DX models will continue to be available for users requiring Madi and/or Dante integration.
With 16 analogue inputs and outputs paired with Adat connectivity, the Pulse 16 AE provides a hub for integrating large-format gear into modern production and performance environments. From expanding audio interfaces to handling multichannel playback on stage, the Pulse 16 AE delivers another affordable expansion option for audio professionals working with high channel counts.
