Audio-Technica has launched BP880R Contact Microphone, designed to pick up impact and surface vibrations and allow broadcasters and other audio specialists to deliver the full realism of sports events and theatre performances.
Because the microphone only picks up impact and vibration, it has very little sensitivity to airborne sound, thus avoiding interference from ambient noise and making it a useful option for broadcasters looking to place viewers in the heart of the action, particularly where sports such as skating, skiing, swimming etc are concerned.
Housed in a low-profile, dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass body coated to prevent corrosion from chlorinated water, and fitted with a waterproof cable, the BP880R is designed to withstand daily use and abuse in the harshest environments.
The microphone can be submerged in water and ice (with waterproof performance to IPX7 standards), buried underground or installed in flooring and offers a myriad of mounting options. The weatherproof body has four through holes for mounting with bolts and nuts or zip ties and a quarter-inch threaded hole for mounting with a single screw.
The phantom-powered BP880R features a high-sensitivity piezoelectric sensor and internal preamplifier, enabling it to transmit clear signals over long cable runs. Since the microphone’s fixed 20m cable has a low-impedance output, it can be extended to greater lengths using balanced cables.
The Audio-Technica BP880R will be available in Europe from October 2026.
