Tannoy has revealed details of what it calls its ‘most significant new product range in several years’.

The form of VX Series will be unveiled at the Integrated Systems Europe show in Amsterdam, and brings a number of advances in Tannoy’s core offering to the pro sound reinforcement market as well as marking the start of a collaboration with Lab.gruppen on the self-powered ‘VXP’ versions – the first product of its type to feature both Tannoy and Lab.gruppen technologies.

VX represents a development of Tannoy’s V Series, offering an expanded range of enclosures and transducer compliments that use next-generation Dual Concentric driver technology with ergonomic, portable and install-friendly  cabinet designs and carefully thought-out functionality.

In addition to an extensive passive range, the line extends into self-powered loudspeakers with the integration of Lab.gruppen amplification.

The ten passive models in the range (nine of which are available in VXP self-powered form) use Tannoy’s Dual Concentric point-source driver. Among the new driver compliments, are 12-inch and 15-inch models debuting Tannoy’s Q-Centric Waveguide (QCW) delivering enhanced pattern control, as well as twin driver models for enhanced LF performance and versatility. A new cabinet design features double-chamfered edges, with new Integrip handles integrated into all but the two smallest enclosures, making one-hand or two-handed lifting of even the largest models easy for portable PA applications.

Each cabinet benefits from a range of fixed-install and portable mounting points as well as road-ready powder-coated steel grille and flush inset termination panels on the rear of the passive devices (with both connector strip and NL4 speakON) and Lab.gruppen’s new IntelliDrive Energy-Efficient Amplifier (IDEEA) module in the case of VXP Series.

The matched Lab.gruppen IDEEA modules are designed to handle the demands of fixed installation audio, with the inherent extended duty cycles of around-the-clock operation and high performance demands, while offering the durability, unmatched power output and clarity required by portable applications. To ensure a long and trouble-free service life, IDEEA modules incorporate extensive features to safeguard internal circuits and driver compliment.

At the heart of the IDEEA module is a patented class-D output stage capable of sustained high power levels with very low distortion – all with near 90% efficiency. A universal switching power supply accepts any mains voltage from 70V-265V (±10%) at 50Hz or 60Hz through the appropriate IEC cord. The power control selector supports two operational modes. In Auto mode, the speaker turns on with signal present and turns off after 20 minutes of no input. (This complies with international energy saving standards, minimising power consumption should the operator forget to turn off the speaker.) The manual control mode allows the speaker to be turned on and off as required. Also provided is a switchable 90Hz high-pass filter for use when adding a subwoofer.

TheVXP Series’ amplifier package also incorporates extensive safeguards for internal circuits and drivers. Protection and warning circuits prevent damage or service interruptions due to excessive current, over-temperature. In addition, soft-start prevents tripped circuit breakers or blown mains fuses.

All models are finished in highly durable scuff-resistant paint – available in black and white as standard, with matching grille assembly and mounting hardware. Custom specified RAL colours are available to perfectly match those aesthetically sensitive installations, while high-spec fully-weatherised versions will also be available, for demanding outdoor applications. An extensive range of mounting hardware flyware will be available, custom designed for VX Series and manufactured by K&M. All hardware has been tested and certified to guarantee greater than 10:1 safety ratio.

Thanks to the asymmetric cabinet profile of the larger VX (and VXP) enclosures, the 12-inch and 15-inch devices can be used as floor monitor wedges, oriented at a variety of angles to suit the performance parameters. All devices have removable plate on underside to reveal pole mount option – making it a serious performer for situations such as portable House of Worship PA or live DJ performance monitoring.
