DGTL Festival
Staged at Amsterdam’s NDSM Docklands recently, the DGTL Festival welcomed around 15,000 partygoers for two days of electronic music. Waiting to entertain them were the likes of Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones, Tom Trago (live), Jennifer Cardini, DJ Koze, and Joy Orbison back-to-back with George Fitzgerald – along with numerous Funktion-One loudspeakers systems.
The event prides itself on balanced programming. While other festivals hinge on large-draw headliners, DGTL combines big names with local and international emerging talents. Such a focus on the musical output demanded sound production to match. The organisers drafted in Think! AV to deliver Funktion-One loudspeaker set-ups for five of DGTL’s six areas.
Scrub makes the news at ITN Productions
ITN Productions is the creative and commercial arm of the ITV news organisation, producing bespoke content for broadcasters, businesses, brands, rights holders and digital channels. With a huge and growing output spanning TV programme making, commercials, sport, corporate and branded content, in-house facilities at the London postproduction facility have grown to 60 edit suites in just five years.
Most recently, this has included the opening of a new audio suite – with equipment supplied by HHB’s specialist Scrub postproduction division.
Emeli Adlibs European tour
Adlib supplied the sound system, rigging and crew for the UK and European leg of Scottish singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé’s Long Live the Angels tour. The Liverpool-based company was recruited by production manager Steve Martin (Tourhouse Productions) to work with FOH engineer Max Bisgrove and monitor man Andrew Williamson.
The itinerary featured a mix of venues covering academies, town halls and arenas, for which Adlib toured a selection of L-Acoustics K1, K2 and Kara loudspeakers in support of an Avid S6L FOH console with Waves external servers, and a Pro Tools rig for virtual soundchecks.
Liberty University claims world first with Constellation
Marrying adjustable architectural acoustics with Meyer Sound’s Constellation active acoustic system, Liberty University’s School of Music now offers its students, faculty, guest ensembles and residents of Lynchburg, Virginia, a performance venue that is almost unique in the world.
Set on building a world-class venue for orchestral and choral music as the centrepiece of its new Center for Music and Worship Arts, the university called on Creative Acoustics’ David Greenberg of to design a hall capable of serving a wide range of uses.
Asia recording expeditions
Self-styled guerilla ethno-musicologist Greg Simmons has led educational recording expeditions through Nepal, India, Tibet, Thailand, Borneo and Burma since 2004. Now he is planning three further visits in Burma (Myanmar) for audio students, industry pros, musicians and composers. Each 11-day expedition focuses on recording the music of a different culture. The expeditions run end-to-end and can be taken together to form a longer journey.
The educational and affordable expeditions include advanced audio lectures, emphasing mic choice and placement. Recording unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar settings requires new ways of thinking about recording, and ultimately equips participants with new skills and concepts that can be applied to any recording situation.
