West Side Story: Something’s Coming
Its 1957 premiere revolutionised the stage musical through Jerome Robbins’ choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s music score. Now, with BB Promotion as organiser, the latest production of West Side Story embarked on a world tour in late 2022 capturing new audiences’ hearts wherever it has visited.
Theatre sound designer and live sound engineer, Tom Marshall, worked with BB Promotion and Stage Sound Services on the audio set-up which includes Sennheiser Digital 6000 wireless audio solutions as well as monitor speakers and microphones from Neumann.
Forever opens in Wuhan
A spectacular opening night marked the opening of China’s largest nightclub project of 2022. Situated in the Xintiandi business district of Wuhan, the Forever Club employs fashion, art and music in its ambition to create a new entertainment landmark. In keeping with its high-class décor and ceiling creations, Forever has invested in a flagship VHD5 sound system from KV2 Audio – the second VHD5 installation in a Chinese nightclub, the first being at Taxx II in Shanghai.
The main room contains breathtaking trussing structures, sophisticated lighting and 3D effects, as well as the VHD5 system which was specified, designed and installed by Guangzhou Idee International Sound System (IDEE) part of KV2’s Chinese distributor AVMedia.
The 1975 At Their Very Best
Touring in support of fifth studio album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language, The 1975 set the bar high with support from Eighth Day Sound. ‘We’re trying to make this the best-sounding show in any room that we go into, regardless of whether it’s acoustically or architecturally challenging,’ says FOH engineer, Lee McMahon from behind his DiGiCo Quantum SD7 desk.
‘It’s certainly the most complex show I’ve ever worked on, and I want that attention to detail to come across,’ he continues. ‘It’s part sound reinforcement, part sound design, all audience/band interaction. When you have a two-hour long show, you have to manage everything down to the precise SPL exposure, so I really want to push and pull on the audience’s reactions and what they’re experiencing.
The Focusrite Room at Platinum Underground
One of just ten built (unit #5) and of only four known still to exist, a Focusrite Studio Console is the centrepiece of a new recording room in John Aquilino’s Platinum Underground complex in the Phoenix area.
The console was originally installed in BOP Studios in South Africa, itself a pioneering world-music recording destination, and its recent recommissioning brings one of the world’s few surviving Focusrite Studio Consoles back into operation, ready to make music, and music history, once more.
Finland’s Soundon commissions new OB
An increase in demand for OB broadcast assignments has seen Finland’s Soundon add a second OB van to its fleet. Equipped with a 5.1 Genelec Smart Active Monitoring System. The addition of the new truck significantly expands the company’s capacity for bookings and postproduction studio sessions.
Opting for a Genelec 5.1 solution, 8351 three-way coaxial monitors were installed in the LCR positions, accompanied by the compact 8331s at the rear and complemented by a 7360 subwoofer (soon to be augmented by a second 7360 for further low-end), selected for their performance and small footprint.
