Bolero and the Arts
Staff communications for Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has become one of its first US applications for Riedel Communications’ Bolero wireless intercom – an expandable, DECT-based wireless intercom system in the licence-free 1.9GHz frequency range.
Cost-effective but maintaining coverage and quality over many spaces, the system serves the extensive facility using proprietary Advanced DECT Receiver (ADR) technology to ensure robust RF performance by reducing sensitivity to multipath RF reflections, while the range and beltpack density require fewer antenne.
TiMax reaches Light Barrier
Commissioned by the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea, Light Barrier is series of installations of ‘viewer-less images’, that aims to ‘create paintings outside of perspective’. For the third installation in the series, the Kimchi and Chips studio behind the project looked to Junghoon Pi, Professor of Music & Sound Design at Seoul Institute of the Arts, owing to his work with TiMax.
Light Barrier is inspired by impressionist painting, and uses a multi-segment mirror system to split beams from eight video projectors into 630 projection elements, which in turn create a total of 16 million pixel beams. Each mirror creates a group of light beams that form animated mid-air images in the heavily hazed space, all varying in both the physical and time domains.

Nils Frahm tours with Stage Tec Aurus platinum
German composer, producer and performer Nils Frahm kicked off his latest tour at the Funkhaus in Berlin on a series of dates that will take him around the world for the coming two years. The concert sold out as quickly as other venues in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Scandinavia, the UK, US, Canada and Japan. Accompanying him on all are sound engineer Terence Goodchild and an Aurus platinum from the Berlin-based manufacturer Stage Tec as his FOH console.
Piano and keyboard virtuoso Frahm makes electronic music with synthesisers, amplifiers, mixing consoles and pianos that straddles the divide between techno and classical music. In addition, in 2015 he won the German Film Award in the category Best Score for the film Victoria.
UWS Audient install brings commercial opportunities
Aiming to ‘upgrade the studio facility to a more professional and commercial level’, the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has installed a 24-channel Audient ASP8024 Heritage Edition analogue mixing console with patchbay and Dual Layer Control (DLC).
‘Our Studio A runs 32 channels of mastering grade conversion which have been phenomenal, so we felt that the replacement console needed to be up to that same standard and quality,’ explain the Music Tech department’s team, Rab McQueen, Robert Goldie and Colin Grassie. ‘The Heritage’s feature of the mix bus compressor and Retro Iron go without saying, but what really stands out to us is the versatility of the console.
