KBS Hall

While it hosts broadcasts of a variety music and concerts, it is for the Open Music Concert that the KBS Hall is best known. Common to all is the South Korean public broadcaster’s pursuit of the highest possible audio quality.

Among its most popular programmes, the Open Music Concert stages sees performances by Korean musicians and international guest. These are broadcast live and also recorded for later broadcast; the recordings are used for anniversary broadcasts and may also be released on CD. The programme of investment in new equipment is ongoing...

Ko Moon AhnThe audio is managed from a control room at the rear of the hall, where an 80-channel SSL 9000K analogue mixing console overlooks the audience and stage. There is also a second SSL mixing console, a C100 digital desk that is used as sub mix for the main desk when required.

The hall’s music events sometimes involve up to 100 people on the stage, and for large classical events there may be as many as 200. This high head count often requires the use of 50 microphones. The choice for main miking is a collection of well-used and well cared-for B&K (DPA) 4011 mics. In support  of this, KBS has upgraded its existing Merging Technologies Pyramix DAW installation.

The installation of the three Horus units is the result of extensive testing by Ko Moon Ahn and Lee Dong Hoon, the principal engineering team at the KBS Hall. As with many broadcasters, the workflow pattern is gradually changing – in this case, to making more mixdowns in Pyramix. ‘We really appreciate the improvements in A/D and D/A conversion with Horus,’ says Ko Moon Ahn. ‘This, combined with Pyramix, is the ideal solution for the recordings we make here.’

The Merging Technologies equipment was supplied by Syncfish, the company’s distributor for South Korea and a regular KBS supplier.
