This year’s ISE trade show will showcase 3DTV in a new 3D Theatre facility, where visitors can get up to speed the best the technology currently has to offer.

As well as its visual technologies, the ISE 3D Theatre will also feature a daily 45-minute presentation by Alcons co-founder Tom Back on the company’s latest 3D audio technology. Taking place at 3pm each day, the presentation will demonstrate how Alcons’ proprietary pro-ribbon transducer products enhance the 3D experience.

‘With higher standards in Digital Cinema, new challenges have arisen for traditional audio systems,’ he says. ‘Twenty-four-bit resolution and up to 99 channels of non-compressed audio demand much more in terms of dynamic capabilities, frequency response and transient response. Cinema is also diversifying – as well as films, movie theatres now show live concerts beamed across the world for fans who can’t get to see the show :in the flesh:. For both of these, high-resolution, wide frequency-bandwidth sound reproduction is required.’

In combination with array technology and coverage control, Alcons’ pro-ribbon transducer technology have brought width and depth to the imaging of stereo and multichannel content, making it possible to deliver the best and most lifelike experience to the audiences of 3D shows. The 3D cinema features a 5.1 surround system, based on three Alcons CRMS (15-inch LF, -inch MF, 4-inch pro-ribbon HF) front systems, two CB181/362 subwoofers and 10 CRMS surround speakers (which feature 8-inch MF and 4-inch pro-ribbon HF). A key feature of the Alcons sessions will be demonstrating the system to show the quality that is possible.

Powered and controlled by ALC2 and ALC4 amplified loudspeaker controllers and DDP digital drive processors, all channels feature ‘studio-grade’ AES/EBU digital-to-analogue conversion.

‘The room is acoustically perfect with special sound absorbing walls from Dutch company Event Acoustics, so it should be an awesome experience,’ Back says. ‘We look forward to showing ISE2011 visitors how good the sound in 3D cinema can be.’
