The Mystery of Edwin DroodRegularly involved in sound design for popular musicals, Toshiya Homma is CEO of Tokyo-based Flic Pro Co – who regularly design and build sophisticated RF solutions for broadcast, film and live production in Japan.

Homma’s company was established in 1996 to manage sound reinforcement systems in theatres operated by Toho across Japan, and has found a valuable asset in Wisycom radio systems. The company has worked on the Japanese productions of many international musical productions, including Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. As an electrical engineering graduate of Tamagawa University in Tokyo, Homma uses his knowledge to design the sound for various types of show.

In 2015, Toho introduced Wisycom systems into the Imperial Theater and Theater Creasion. As the resident sound designer at these venues, Homma has become familiar with and impressed by Wisycom’s products. ‘My most recent project, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, was performed in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka,’ he says. ‘Wisycom has developed digital technology that can be used in various locations and applications. The systems flat audio frequency response makes this a great solution for musical productions.’

In a typical set-up, Homma uses Wisycom’s MTP41S UHF pocket transmitters and MRK920 modular wireless microphone receiver systems. Depending on the performance, he uses DiGiCo SD7 and SD8 mixing consoles for larger venues, and Yamaha PM5D consoles for smaller shows. Homma also mainly uses Meyer Sound speakers in all the venues he works in.

‘The MTP41S is an ultra-compact, yet robust pocket transmitter designed for practical use,’ Homma adds. ‘Recently, there has been an increasing number of microphones with Lemo connectors. The fact that the MTP41S provides a Lemo connector makes my job that much easier. The MRK920 is a great system for any of my productions, as it can handle up to 32 groups of 16 frequencies each. Having these two products in my arsenal enhances my workflow, enabling me to provide the best sound possible.’

Like many sound professionals who move between locations, Homma values equipment he can rely on to transmit clean audio regardless of location: ‘Wisycom products simplify my audio transmissions, making it easy to adjust the sound field no matter the production. After using the products on a daily basis, I am fully confident in my Wisycom devices. Every time I switch them on, they provide stability and high-quality audio. I look forward to using them on all my future projects.’
