Mastering of Faith No More’s Sol Invictus and Yes live album Like It Is have recently passed through the hands of Maor Appelbaum in his LA facility. Both made use of Appelbaum’s carefully constructed mastering set-up, based around a Mutec MC-3+ Smart Clock.
‘I like the way the Mutec MC-3+ Smart Clock affects my workflow,’ he explains. ‘It sounds smooth and easy on the ear, very clear and detailed, and the stereo image is wide and open. This clock impressed me after less then five minutes of testing, so I bought it on the spot. I actually keep a spare of the MC-3+ around as a backup to make sure I never have to work without it.’
While the Yes album was recorded at the Bristol Hippodrome, Faith No More’s is the band’s first in 18 years. Maor – a native of Israel – has more than 20 years’ experience in audio, having worked as staff engineer (mixing, recording and mastering) for record producer Sylvia Massy at Radiostar and subsequently moved to Los Angeles to open his mastering suite.
His client list encompasses Sepultura, Rob Halford, Anvil, William Shatner and blues-rock legends Eric Gales and Walter Trout.
