Working high-end pop and rock acts as well as crossover acts and movie and gaming soundtracks, producer/mixer Andy Bradfield has completed a complete upgrade of his London studio facility.

Andy BradfieldAs the four-time Latin Grammy nominated Bradfield began his career at Olympic and Townhouse studios, he turned to ex-Olympic Maintenance Engineer Paul Wilkes for the work on his Studio A. ‘The studio is based around a Pro Tools HDX system with Xmon software, and I use an Icon 24 mixing surface, which suits me and the way I work,’ he says. ‘Originally the Icon was hardwired for mixing only, but we added a patchbay so that I can introduce Neve preamps and compressors as I want.

‘Paul recommended we used Van Damme blue series cable almost exclusively, because of its reliability and suppleness when running it around corners and tight turns. In other words it turned into a major project to turn the studio into a world-class facility.’

The main control room is approx 6m x 6m, and includes tie lines to the recording area, enabling Bradfield to connect a visiting laptop or other device to the desk. With stereo and surround capabilities and the 72 I/O Pro Tools system as well as 8x8-way connections in and out of the X-mon system – which handles all the speaker and monitor configurations – the connections required more than over 250m of Van Damme Blue Series 24-way multicore as well as 50m of two-way.

‘All the connectors, cable and assemblies were supplied by VDC Trading who I am pleased to say were great, really on the case,’ he reports.

Bradfield has delivered a diverse range of successful projects, and splits his time between making records and mixing movie sound tracks, both in 5.1 and stereo as the projects dictate.
