A recent concert staged in front of 45,000 fans at the River Plate stadium in Buenos Aires saw US rockers Bon Jovi playing on a ‘green’ agenda. ‘We wanted to make this remarkable performance a green statement by reducing the carbon footprint of the concert,’ says Federico Sainz, CEO of Buenos Aires Live Show, the sound company that provided the system for the show.

Powersoft amp racksThe massive FOH speaker rig used for the gig comprised 36 JBL VerTec VT4889-1 three-way line array elements for the main FOH with a further 24 VerTec VT4889-1 boxes for the FOH side main. These were accompanied by 40 BALS (Buenos Aires Live Show) VCA line array boxes and 48 2x21-inch VCA subwoofers for the LCR and satellite delays. Driving the rig were 60 Powersoft K10 and K8 amplifiers. The high-efficiency design of the K Series allowed the show to be powered by a bio-fuel AC generator without missing a beat.

‘If we used traditional power-hungry amplifiers, we could not take this approach because of the incredibly large current draw,’ Sainz explains. ‘The K10 and K8 amplifiers operate at over 90 per cent efficiency – a green statement in itself – making it possible to use this new power generating technology. It was estimated that this concert saved 10 tonnes of CO2 emissions, a significant reduction over the past.

Since Bon Jovi’s last appearance in Argentina was more than 15 years ago, expectations were high – of both the band and the sound. ‘The sound quality needed to be first rate all the way,’ says Sainz. ‘Powersoft amplifiers provided sterling sound quality with an extremely tight bass response, delivering a high-level sonic performance to the packed audience. Powersoft also did not handicap the transient response, as its operational efficiency never stressed the power generator’s supply. In essence, by using Powersoft amplifiers, it was possible to get the same amount of audio power using half the electricity required for regular power amplifiers.’

‘We were very pleased with the results of the green experiment for the Bon Jovi concert,’ says Carlos Maiocchi, CEO of Equaphon Sistemas de Sonido, Powersoft’s representative for Argentina. ‘Powersoft is a green-designed product from the ground up delivering high-level, clean, clear audio power in a 1U-high rack package weighing 26lbs. In every way, from low transport weight to greatly reduced heat generation, Powersoft was the ideal choice for this green event.’
