Taking place alongside the Hong Kong Electronics Fair, the recent electronicAsia event was witness to the current 3DTV Tile Format from Italian research, development, and technical consulting company, Sisvel Technology.

The broadcast format allows the integrated storage of two stereoscopic 720p frames into a single 1080p frame. The reconstructed left and light pictures keep their original resolution and are unaffected by the imbalance in vertical and horizontal resolution. The layout of Tile Format images, together with past standard compliant technologies developed by Sisvel Technology, allows the decoding of 2D video from the 3D transmission.

The demo called on broadcast chain equipment developed together with partner equipment (including a BLT professional panelizer, Utah Scientific mixer and H.264 encoder from Motorola). At the receiving end of the 3D chain, content requires a set-top box based on the ST7108 chipset from Antik Technology or a Vestel TV set for decoding.

‘The advantages of the 3D Tile Format in bandwidth efficiency, picture quality, and backwards compatibility with 2D are so strong that any broadcaster currently operating in 3D, or considering a 3D service, should definitely put Sisvel Technology at the top of the must-see list for electronicAsia,’ says Sisvel Technology CEO, Paolo D’Amato.

Several Italian broadcasters are presently operating 3D services using the 3D Tile Format – Quartarete and Città Digitali have syndicated 3D HD content that it is broadcasting in the Piedmont and Tuscany regions of Italy. A 3D Tile channel is available throughout Europe from SES Astra Satellite on 19.2° East.

Members joining the open syndicate will be offered access to 3D from existing members on a free reciprocal basis.
