Able to support more than 20 cameras and 20 servers, US live sports and entertainment event broadcast specialist, NEP, has a new OB truck. Packing a lot of technolong and able to handle 1080p, the Denali California truck is fitted with a 72 dual-fader Calrec Apollo in its audio room.

The standalone vehicle is designed for top-flight live shows where outside broadcast facility space is limited – as at the Super Bowl, Tony Awards and Kennedy Center Honors Gala.

‘There’s not a lot of parking at the Kennedy Center or at Radio City in Manhattan so the audio is handled out of one audio room with a single mixer doing both the podium portion of the awards show as well as all the music,’ says NEP Broadcasting’s Chief Technology Officer, George Hoover ‘The mixer may have dozens of wireless microphones on the talent plus playback elements and the orchestra. To get the job done, he needs a powerful desk with multiple layers and multiple faders on the main control surface – and that describes the Calrec Apollo.’

NEP considers all options when it buys new audio consoles, but consistently chooses Calrec and is virtually an all-Calrec house. Key selling points for the Apollo were its dual-fader technology, which simplifies a big show mix by giving fast access to a large number of controls. More pluses are its weight; integrated Hydra2 networking, which unifies I/O whether it’s inside or outside the truck; reliability; sound quality, and client-attracting state-of-the-art technology.

Apollo is Calrec’s top-of-the-line audio console, using on Bluefin2 high-density signal processing to provide extensive resources at multiple sample rates. At 48kHz, Bluefin2 gives Apollo up to 1,020 channel processing paths, 128 programme buses, 96 IFB/track outputs, and 48 auxiliaries.

‘With its exclusive focus on entertainment events, NEP Denali has earned an outstanding reputation as well as standing invitations to provide HD and digital facilities for major award shows and other live broadcasts,’ says Calrec Director of Sales for the Americas, Jim Wilmer. ‘Calrec’s rugged, compact, and powerful digital audio consoles are a key component of the outstanding production quality for which NEP is known.’

Serving the world’s premiere broadcast networks and production companies, NEP provides facilities, engineering expertise, and technical management to support telecasting of major events and programs around the globe.
