Two weeks of FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2019 held at the National Arena in Åre, Sweden, finished with the final slalom contest and Closing Ceremony. The event saw new world champions crowned in downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, alpine combined and the alpine team event – and broke new ground in remote production.

Alpine World Ski Championships With international top athletes participating, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships also shone through the sound and pictures broadcast to a TV audience all over the world. Sweden’s SVT provided the host production coverage, pushing the boundaries of remote production when it sent audio and video signals (from more than 80 cameras) from the course via two 100Gbps fiber circuits to control rooms in Stockholm.

SVT employed an IP-based Lawo audio remote production set-up, using up to 32 Lawo A__mic8 AoIP nodes for microphone contribution and a 72-fader Lawo mc²96 audio production console in Stockholm, plus an additional remote 24-fader mc²96 in Åre. The overarching control of all video and audio was handled by Lawo’s VSM (Virtual Studio Manager System), which also provided tally logic switching of the 160 AfVs (Audio Follow Video) events on the mc²96. Lawo additionally provided on-site consultancy for the AoIP infrastructure set-up.

The Lawo mc² series audio mixing console has been specifically designed to provide optimal performance in audio and video production environments through its native support of all relevant AoIP standards – SMPTE 2110-30, AES67, Ravenna and Dante. The A__mic8 nodes are developed for multiple applications and environments, designed to satisfy highest demands in audio quality, providing ultra low distortion and noise, with premium grade mic preamplifiers. Lawo VSM is an independent IP-based broadcast control system that readily integrates with a wide variety of popular broadcast equipment, including video routers and switchers, audio routers and consoles, multiviewers, intercoms, and other third-party devices.
