Armenian-American alternative metal band System of a Down, (SOAD) have completed a recent tour of Europe using Klang:technologies 3D monitor mixing system.
‘I introduced SOAD to Klang at a rehearsal session in 2015,’ says monitor engineer Pasi Hara, who has extensive experience of Klang:technologies 3D mixing system and is an enthusiastic ambassador for its possibilities.. ‘Once they heard the difference it can make, there was no turning back. For the musicians it adds a whole new dimension to their mix, adding space to place instruments so you can actually lower levels as they are not competing against each other anymore. With its transparent quality sound and the natural and intuitive placement of sound, it lets musicians focus on their music and not the monitor system.
‘We had a pretty extensive Dante network, designed and maintained by our techs Liam Halpin and Ville Kauhanen,’ he continues. ‘It had multiple recording and Wavetool monitoring locations in 48kHz and the Klang:fabrik running in 96kHz for minimum latency trough Midas Pro-X Quantum engine Dante slots. After processing the Klang mixes were routed back to the console via Dante and onto the Shure PSM1000 In-Ear transmitters. Once set up, the Klang interface is completely intuitive. For the engineer it’s another piece in the big puzzle that has to work flawlessly and the Klang:fabrik has proved to be a very solid piece of hardware that travels and performs well every time.’
Taking in numerous festivals, System of a Down’s 2017 tour included performances in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Russia.
As well as SOAD, Hara has used Klang on Slash, Fergie and Beck band monitors. ‘Every time I have a chance to add Klang to a new project I try to do that, because it makes such a difference,’ he reports. ‘I try to have my personal unit with me whenever I travel.’
