Since its release in 1998, Yamaha’s 01V has been a familiar sight in applications ranging from recording and production environments to live sound and installation set-ups. With the release of the 01V96i the digital mixer pioneer has built on the desk’s earlier configurations to address the needs of an expanding user base.
Among the improvements are 16-input/16-output USB 2.0 audio streaming at 96kHz, the latest version of Steinberg's Cubase AI, the full suite of Yamaha's Virtual Circuitry Modeling DSP effects and improved head amps.
With up to 40 simultaneous inputs and 20 buses at 96kHz, the 01V96i claims large console power in a rack-mount sized package. Offering a main stereo bus, eight individual mixing buses, two solo buses, and eight auxiliary buses – a total of 20 buses.
The 01V96i offers 16 analogue channel inputs – 12 with improved head amps – along with eight-channel optical Adat, coaxial 2-track inputs and 16 inputs via USB. Analogue outputs include the main stereo output, stereo monitor outputs, a stereo 2-track output, four Onmi outputs, 12 channel TRS insert points and a headphones output, matched with coaxial 2-track outputs and eight-channel optical Adat for digital output.
A main stereo mix bus, eight individual mixing buses, two solo buses and eight auxiliary buses – a total of 20 – provide signal-routing options to adapt to differing mixing requirements.
Effects
Onboard VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) effects include Channel Strip, Master Strip, Reverb and Stomp box programmes.
The Channel Strip comprises five models of compression and EQ units from the 1970s – modelling of the original FET gain reduction, tube/transformer buffer amplifier, VCA and RMS detector circuits.
The Master Strip employs VCM technology to recreate analogue circuitry and tape characteristics that shaped the sound of open-reel tape recorders. Open Deck provides four machine types – Swiss ’70, Swiss ’78, Swiss ’85 and American ’70. Different record and playback decks can be combined for a wider range of variation. There are also ‘old’ and ‘new’ tape types, tape speed, bias, and EQ settings that can vary the ‘focus’ of the sound, distortion, and saturation characteristics. Internal high-resolution reverbs employ Yamaha’s latest Rev-X algorithms – Rev-X Hall, Rev-X Room and Rev-X Plate programmes are provided, with new parameters such as room size and decay envelopes. The Rev-X Hall and Rev-X Room programmes claim ‘a very open sound’, while Rev-X Plate ‘delivers a brighter tonality that is ideal for vocals.
Vintage Stomp modelling gives three different phasers modelled on stompbox effects units of the 70s. Yamaha's VCM technology claims ‘all the warmth and atmosphere of the original vintage units, and combines it with the control and processing flexibility that a digital environment affords’.
Expansion
Yamaha offers a range of mini-YGDAI expansion cards that can be inserted into the 01V96i’s expansion slot., allowing analogue audio formats, standard digital audio and dedicated third-party proprietary network protocols, and Mini-YGDAI I/O to provide in a wide variety of audio and network formats.
The 01V96i Cascade Link allows two units to ne cascaded, giving up to 80 channels of mixing capability.
