Aimed at smaller applications, Funktion-One’s SB210A is an active bass unit, with two additional amplifier channels to drive a pair of satellite speakers. An example system using the SB210A would comprise a pair of Funktion-One F55s, F81s or F101s.

The SB210A makes Funktion-One systems available in smaller environments without investing in all of the separate elements – speakers, a bass unit, an amplifier and possibly a crossover. Studios, small events such as a gallery exhibition or a small party for up to around 100 people can now be served by the new set-up. Extremely low fan noise, which is a fundamental part of the amplifier’s design, minimises any environmental disturbance for noise-sensitive applications, like a studio.

Taking a stereo input from an XLR or quarter-inch-jack connection, the SB210A offers set crossover points at 100Hz, 125Hz or 150Hz. It features separate level control for bass and for the satellite speakers, and a polarity reverse switch for the bass output. The unit has been designed for the specific requirements of Funktion-One’s drivers and has been optimised accordingly. It comes with limiting and protection configured for both the bass unit and the satellite speakers.

‘We’ve been looking at developing a system like this for quite a while but we struggled to find a suitable three-channel amplifier module,’ says Funktion-One’s Tony Andrews. ‘In the end, we had to commission a new Funktion-One amp design, which we’re very happy with.

‘We wanted to bring the feeling of a big Funktion-One system into a smaller environment so that, for example, DJ/producers, who are playing at big clubs and events, can continue that experience when they’re creating music and listening back to it. All the accuracy and imagery of our bigger systems is there. It had to be or we wouldn’t be launching it.’
