The RadioPhonic to be offered to synth fans

UK-based modular synthesiser company AJHSynth has been commissioned by Hans Zimmer to custom build The RadioPhonic, a one-of-a-kind supersynth that will take centre stage at a new sound studio being created on the original site of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop at London’s Maida Vale Studios.

The studio is part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment following the sale of the complex to a partnership that includes Zimmer – who has now given the green light to AJHSynth to produce a limited number of further RadioPhonics, the first of which is being launched at Superbooth24 in Berlin,

Vienna’s mdw installs Lawo audio production console

Among the largest music universities in the world, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) operates more than nine locations across Vienna, with courses for various instruments, conducting, music education, performing arts and audio engineering.

Recently, the university and Lawo collaborated on the installation of a Lawo mc²56 MkIII audio production console with the A__UHD Core in the mdw’s Tonregie 1 studio, which is now being used to both train students and for daily productions.

First pairing for L-Acoustics’ L-ISA and L Series array

Among the most exciting acts currently on the Italian music scene, Coez & Frah Quintale’s album Lovebars recently saw them selling out arenas throughout the country. They chose to use immersive audio for the shows, pairing L-Acoustics’ L-ISA spatial audio with the L Series line array for the first time.

‘The use of L-ISA was a huge upgrade in terms of spatialisation, focus, sound impact and sound definition,’ says Sound Designer Valerio Motta, who worked to help adopt the two technologies. ‘Adding L Series was the icing on the cake. L2 is a huge advance in many ways – small footprint, easy to rig and low weight which is crucial for several hangs in an immersive configuration.’

Location recording pilgrimage for Qivittoq

Milan-based renowned pianist, composer and sound recordist, Andrea Manzoni is part of a movement aiming to redefine the musical landscape with an approach that blurs the boundaries of traditional music styles. He recently made a transformative journey into Icelandic wilderness for the sound design of Qivittoq, a theatrical production set in the North Pole of a world rapidly depleting its resources.

Working from a draft script from the director, Manzoni secured a 30-day residency in the remote town of Isafjordur in the Westfjords, in order to make 12 excursions to locations devoid of human presence. Here, he was to capture raw environmental sounds with shotgun mics.

The Nature of Spatialisation

Early March saw sound designer Simon Honywill using TiMax SoundHub and TiMax TrackerD4 performer stagetracking to bring spatial treatment to the Paraorchestra performance of The Nature of Why.

Composed by Will Gregory and choreographed by Caroline Bowditch under the artistic direction of conductor Charles Hazelwood, the production is an interpretation of the interview with physicist Richard Feynman asks in empirical terms why certain physical properties occur. Performed within the confines of a 14m circular space on the Lyric Stage at Theatre Royal Plymouth, with 100-120 audience members mingling amongst the players and dancers for each performance this is the first occasion that it has called on TiMax spatialisation.

Alcons Audio has announces the Launch Partner Program for its LR24 mid-sized pro-ribbon line-array system.

Alcons LR24 ribbon R&D teamDesigned for concert touring and large-scale installation, LR24s initial beta phase is now concluded. According to Alcons, the LR24 is actually ‘a synergetic toolbox of line-array modules, bass array module, different subwoofer principles, dedicated power and processing platform, power-, signal- and transport logistics, high-resolution simulation software and factory-direct user-network support’.

Central to its design is the newly developed pro-ribbon transducer for mid and high frequencies. ‘A longstanding ambition was to see how far we could take our pro-ribbon transducer technology, in terms of sheer power output,’ Philip ‘Dr Phil’ de Haan, co-founder and head of Alcons Audio R&D, explains. ‘For the LR24 we purposely built the 02-platform and even more efficient than our evolutionary 01 platform.’

The result is a 14-inch tall, single-diaphragm pro-ribbon with 14-inch voice-coil that claims up to 90 per cent lower distortion and a flat frequency response beyond 20kHz at concert sound pressure levels. Another crucial element is the new Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controller, which contains multiple processors, as well as four individual audiophile amplifier stages, totaling more than 10kW of power, directed by an integrated Linux micro-computer, under touchscreen control.

‘The completely linear response, the stunning resolution and dynamic response of this system, in combination with perfect throw capacities, will change the way engineers create their mix,’ says Alcons co-found Tom Back. ‘Even the most subtle details are now audible, becoming a relevant ingredient of the performance. Or, as we would put it: What You Mix Is What You Get’.

The LR24 is part of The Ribbon Network, Alcons’ global rental network, for dry-hire cooperation between members, joint product development, information exchange and factory-direct support. The complete LR24 system contains no less than six global patents and patent-applications. ‘Unlike our peers, we don’t have an extensive user backbone in the live-sound/touring market,’ Back adds. ‘This enabled us to start with a blank piece of paper in terms of development, without any protocols or heritage to take into account. At the same time, it allows us to cater for the interest we receive from owners across all top brand systems.

‘With the Launch Partner Program, we enable a select group of forward-thinking users to get access to this technology at an earlier stage; these innovators will be part of the final development stage and we’re inviting those who are interested in the program to get in touch with us.’
